Tigers lacrosse opens with 14-7 win over Eagles

Sophomore attackman Jake O’Brien scored a game-high five goals, adding one assist, to lead Hampden-Sydney College’s lacrosse team to a season-opening 14-7 victory against visiting University of Mary Washington on Saturday.

Senior captain attackman John Burke added four goals and an assist for the Tigers, who led 7-2 at halftime.

Hampden-Sydney posted three of the four goals scored in the fourth quarter to provide for the final seven-goal margin of victory.

Tigers junior captain and goalkeeper Nick Arcuri played the duration, yielding just seven goals in 60 minutes while making 16 saves. Sophomore Jake Brummett was strong in the X, winning 16 of 25 face-offs, adding a game-high 13 ground balls as Hampden-Sydney took a 36-33 advantage in that statistical category.

The Tigers took a 49-34 advantage in shots, including 26-23 in shots on-goal, and they had 13 caused turnovers.

Hampden-Sydney visits Greensboro College on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
