Waterworks Players will hold auditions Aug. 26-27 for its October production of “Blithe Spirit.”

Written by Noel Coward, “Blithe Spirit” is a celebrated comedy about ghosts that set a London West End long-run record in the 1940s.

The play did well on Broadway and was made into a film in 1945 starring Rex Harrison. In a 1964 musical adaptation, “High Spirits,” was made from Coward’s original version. Radio and television versions have also entertained audiences along with West End and Broadway revivals. Dudley Sauve will direct the production.

Blithe Spirit is set at the house of a successful novelist, Charles Condomine and his wife, Ruth. One evening Charles invites local eccentric medium, Madame Arcati to hold a séance at his house. He also invites friends Dr. and Mrs. Bradman, intending to gather character inspiration from Madame Arcati for his latest book.

Despite initially thinking the séance has been a failure it soon becomes clear that Madame Arcati has unwittingly brought back Charles’ first wife to haunt him. Following the death of Ruth, Charles becomes haunted by the ghosts of both wives.

Waterworks is seeking seven actors of various ages for the following roles:

• Charles Condomine: In his forties, Charles is an urbane novelist. He is the husband of Ruth Condomine and deceased first wife, Elvira.

• Ruth Condomine: A smart looking woman and is the wife of Charles. She is a bit jealous of Charles’s relationship with his first wife.

• Dr. Bradman: A pleasant- looking middle-aged man, he is a friend of the Condomines.

• Mrs. Bradman: The wife of Dr. Bradman, she is middle-aged and a bit faded.

• Madame Arcati: A middle-aged spiritualist, Madame Arcati is a striking woman. She is not too extravagant but has a definite bias toward the barbaric.

• Elvira: Charles Condomine’s deceased first wife, who returns as a ghost. She makes Charles’s and Ruth’s lives very complicated.

• Edith: The Condomine’s maid, Edith is always in a hurry.

Auditions will be held 7:30 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the Waterworks Theater. There will be cold readings from the script. In addition, a number of stage hands are needed to assist during technical week rehearsals and the four public performances. There will be five performances, Oct. 12, 13, 14, 19 and 20, with a Sunday matinee in addition to the regular Friday and Saturday evening shows.
