A fallen tree in the area of Route 45, Cumberland Road, just north of the Randolph District Volunteer Fire Department station, caused some traffic delays Thursday afternoon.

Dan Pempel, chief of the Randolph District Volunteer Fire Department, said the department received the call about the fallen tree that covered the road at approximately 2:30 p.m.

He said representatives from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) were able to move enough debris from the oak tree to clear one lane. VDOT crew also directed traffic between the two lanes.

A front end loader, driven by a VDOT crew member, removed additional debris.

Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the incident.

Pempel said the fire department is unsure of the cause of the tree falling.
