Deidre Martin has officially announced her candidacy for the office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court for Cumberland County in the upcoming special election to be held Tuesday, Nov. 6. In 2005, Martin graduated from Buckingham County High School. After graduating, she was employed by the Branch Banking and Trust Company (“BB&T”) as a bank teller and quickly advanced to the position of a teller supervisor. She was later promoted to relationship banker.
Martin accepted the position of Deputy Clerk for the Circuit Court of Cumberland County July 1, 2011, serving under then clerk Carol Ownby until her retirement in 2013. She was later appointed Chief Deputy Clerk by Sarah A. “Kate” Spry, who retired April 30. On May 1, Deidre assumed the role of clerk as authorized by the Code of Virginia.
Martin’s experience in the Cumberland County Clerk’s Office positions her to continue performing the many duties of the clerk, which include recording and maintaining land records, adoptions, criminal and civil cases, probating wills and administering estates, jury management, preparing court dockets and orders, and assisting the judges with all case files. As clerk, Martin says it is her desire and her duty to serve all citizens of Cumberland County with efficient and quality customer service in a helpful and friendly atmosphere. She will carry on the prolonged legacy as previous clerks have in preserving and upholding the safekeeping of the records of Cumberland County. Martin is also in the process of implementing a new electronic filing system for court cases with The Supreme Court of Virginia.
She is married to Blake Martin and they live on the family farm, “Melrose,” in Cartersville. She is the daughter of Dennis “Bookie” Davis, Jr. and Dorothy Davis and the daughter-in-law of Edward “Chip” Martin and Barbara Norman Moore. She and Blake have two children, Gracie and Jackson. Gracie is a student at Cumberland County Elementary School and plays T-Ball in the Cumberland Recreational League. As a family, they enjoy spending time together on the farm and with their friends, camping, and coaching and attending Gracie’s ballgames. Deidre and Blake are active members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
