Adventures for tweens and teens

Summer break is here and those tweens and teens are already restless. Send them on an adventure at Twin Lakes State Park July 5 from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., sponsored by the Buckingham Extension Office. The theme is just plain fun and is designed for ages 12-18. Bring a lunch or prepare to purchase at concession stand. Cost is variable depending upon the activity. Opportunities include swimming, hiking, fishing and paddling. For more information, call (434) 969-4261.

Numerous times throughout the summer, Holliday Lake State Park hosts “Beneath the Surface,” involving an exploration of what lies in the depths of the lake. Grab a flashlight and join the fun. The location is the T-dock near the beach. Holliday Lake State Park is located on 2759 State Park Road, in Appomattox. For more information, call (434) 248-6308.

On June 16, James River State Park is hosting a day of history in and around the state park. James River State Park offers modern cabins and lodges available for rent, as well as excellent camping sites and equestrian camping facilities. Vendors wanted for an event July 21 at Gene Dixon Senior Memorial Park. This event will raise money to assist Coach Seth Wilkerson with recent medical bills due to ongoing health concerns. Any vendors interested in setting up at this event, contact Melissa Edwards at (434) 315-4845. Space will be outdoors, so bring your own tent, table and chair. There is a set-up fee.

Buckingham Arts and Recreation Department offers year-round karate classes. Come try out this great program to learn discipline, learn self-defense, build confidence, build character and become motivated. Classes are held at the Buckingham Agriculture Building every Wednesday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Ages include four to adult. The instructor is James Walker. For more information, call (434) 969-4242.

Artificial Insemination Training Course for Cattle will be held June 13 – 14 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the BARN facility in Buckingham at 11851 W. James Anderson Highway. Registration has been extended, contact the Buckingham Extension Office by calling (434) 969-4261 or email rclaboug@ vt.edu if you would like to attend. There is a 15 person participant limit. Covered topics include anatomy, physiology, heat detection and timing, tank care and semen handling, AI Synchronization and AI techniques. This course includes hands-on practice with semen handling and breeding cows.
