Summer fun in the neighborhood

The Buckingham Dillwyn Garden Club (BDGC) will be celebrating its 85th Anniversary as a member of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. The club has been a vital community member since 1933. The Dillwyn Clock Plaza, Blue Star Memorial and the Nature Habitat at Curdsville are only a few of the club’s contributions to the county. All past members of the BDGC are cordially invited to attend this special event Monday, June 11, at the Buckingham Arts Center from 2-4 p.m.

Buckingham Instructional Coed Basketball Camp will be held July 9-12 at the Maysville Baptist Church gymnasium daily from 9 a.m. – noon and is designed for ages 9-14. Head instructor is Dwayne Braxton, former player at James Madison University. Rick Caldwell, former player at Hampden-Sydney College will also be an instructor. Skills taught include shooting, passing, free throw shooting, block-outs, defense and team play. Players will be divided into groups rotating through all skill stations. Cedar Baptist Church, located 3932 Bell Road in Dillwyn would like to welcome everyone to Vacation Bible School beginning Sunday, June 10, through Thursday, June 14, from 6-9 p.m. each night for ages two through high school. There will also be an adult class beginning at 6:45 p.m. each night. All are welcome to come out and enjoy the fun.

The Curdsville Community Center will hold its next meeting Monday at 6:30 p.m. There will be a potluck dinner, but please bring a favorite covered dish or dessert. The program will feature a speaker from Madeline’s House. Attendees are encouraged to bring items that would benefit Madeline’s House residents to include any of the following: toiletries, paper products, twin sheet sets, batteries, diapers, cleaning supplies, over-the-counter pain medication and any other various sundries. Buckingham TRIAD will be meet June 14 at 1:30 p.m. at the VFW Hall on Route 60 in Buckingham County.

Sprouse’s Corner Ranch, LLC provides horse shows, camps and workshops. From June 4-8, a camp will be offered for young people ages 4-7 from 9 a.m. – noon. Experienced ponies will teach these junior campers safety, grooming, and riding skills at their own pace. For more information, call (434) 983-8181.

The Buckingham Extension Office is hosting a 4-H Fun Art Day on Tuesday, July 3, from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Plan to paint a canvas with step-by-step instructions. Also explore other artistic media and enjoy outdoor play as well. For ages 5-18. Pack a lunch. For additional information, call (434) 969-4261.

Central Virginia Health Services hosts nearly daily activities for community members. Come out and enjoy a class on Just Walk on Friday, at 11 a.m. On Monday, kickboxing is offered at 6 p.m. and Tai Chi on Tuesday, at 9:30 a.m. Yoga is offered at 5 p.m. Wednesday. For all those trying to reach healthy weights, a Weight Watchers meeting will be held on Thursday, at 2:45 p.m. If you are looking for that bikini body for the beach this summer, attend a class on Friday, June 8, at 11 a.m. Keep it moving this summer and stay in shape.
