Each year the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) holds a writing contest to encourage young people to think creatively about American history. This contest is open to students in public, private, parochial schools and registered homestudy programs. Students in grades five-eight are encouraged to participate. Each year, a selected topic for use during the academic year is announced and contest instructions are published online and sent to schools by participating DAR chapters. This year’s topic was “World War I: Remembering the War to End All Wars.” Criteria to determine the winners of the contest include historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of materials, interest, originality, spelling, grammar and punctuation. The winners from Cumberland were recognized at the April meeting of the School Board. Taylor Shores was the fifth grade winner and Cheyenne Crenshaw was the seventh grade winner.
