Calling all area artists

The Buckingham County Art Council will host its Juried Art Show for the 28th year. It is open to all the wonderful artists in the area. The categories involved are all phases of art such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography, fiber art, sculpture, jewelry and woodworking. Entries will be accepted on Tuesday, May 15, from 2-7 p.m. at the Buckingham Art Center located at 30 West James Anderson Highway in Buckingham Court House. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, May 20, from 2-4 p.m. All work should be original, executed in the past three years and not a first-place winner in any category at a previous Art Council show. Are you a local business that would like to have some additional advertising while helping a Buckingham civic organization? The Buckingham Ruritan Club is organized for the purpose of creating a better understanding between the people and through volunteer community service, making America’s communities a better place to live and work. The club’s slogan is “Fellowship, Goodwill and Community Service.” Help this organization by purchasing advertisement space on a community calendar. Contact any Ruritan Club member for more details.

Quick Start Tennis is a growing program that USTA (United States Tennis Association) has developed. This program introduces tennis to youth at an early age. The Buckingham County Recreation Department is hosting this program from June 25-29 from 9-11 a.m. at the Buckingham County High School. Designed for children 6-11 years of age, the equipment is made in a smaller version so children can learn while having fun playing tennis. Deadline to register is June 20. Have some fun while you join instructor Erica Lake for Buckingham County Recreation Department’s coed Tennis Clinic to be held June 11-15 at Buckingham High School from 3-4:30 p.m. for ages 8-18. Deadline to register is June 6. For questions, call (434) 969-4242.

The Buckingham County Public Library is ushering in spring with some special events. On Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m., preschool story time is designed for ages birth through 5 (with an adult chaperone) to enjoy books, rhymes, crafts, games and more. This program is a great way for young ones to socialize with each other. This also allows adults to pick up early literacy information. No sign-up required.

Virginia Cooperative Extension – Buckingham Office is hosting Cloverbud Summer Sensation Day Camp from June 12-14 from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Buckingham Extension office. Enjoy a variety of activities to include arts, crafts, field trips, games and more. Call (434) 969-4261 for questions or registration. Learn how to sew at the Buckingham Extension Office. On June 5 and 6, youth will spend time learning to use a sewing machine while working on a project or two. There will also be time for fun and games. Weight Watchers is coming to Central Virginia Community Health Center. Meetings will be on Thursdays at 2:45 p.m. beginning May 17. Meetings will be held in the gym in the group class room.
