Prince Edward United Way has raised $46,000 toward its $55,000 goal, and members of the all-volunteer Prince Edward County United Way’s board of directors celebrated by putting another star on the board in front of Citizens Bank & Trust. Pictured are, from left, Lonnie Calhoun, Rucker Snead, Jennifer Tobias, Sandy Cooke, Jamie C. Ruff, Bruce Davis, Jennifer Kinne and Kerry Mossler. Along with board members is an inflatable duck, emblem of the group’s fast-approaching Great Farmville Duck Derby. The derby will be held 5 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Riverside Park as part of the Heart of Virginia Festival, and the funds raised by the event will go toward the 20 local organizations funded by the United Way. Plans call for 5,000 ducks to be sold by early April. Owner of the first place duck will receive $1,000; the second-place duck, $500; and the third-place duck, $250. Ducks can be adopted through the United Way, Citizens Bank in Farmville, The Fishin’ Pig restaurant and Uptown Coffee Café. You can also purchase ducks at the Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce.
