Civil War Trails, Inc. has teamed up with the destination marketing organization, Virginia’s Crossroads, Sailor’s Creek Battlefield State Park, and Sandy Creek Baptist Church on an exciting new stop along the ‘Lee’s Retreat Trail.’ This new sign is approximately 65 miles into the 125-mile trail and recounts the harrowing battle fought here on April 6, 1865.
Historian Chris Calkins of Sailor’s Creek Battlefield State Park unearthed a rare photograph of the hamlet of Deatonsville which allows guests to better envision what this now quiet intersection looked like 153 years ago. Thanks to Sandy Creek Baptist Church, you can catch glimpses of the terrain around you and easily imagine the tumultuous events as they swirled around you.
The new sign is one of over 1,550 sites on the Civil War Trail which now includes six states, the world’s largest ‘open air museum.’ Supported by communities, municipalities and tourism agencies like Virginia’s Crossroads each site is marketed internationally. Over a quarter million Civil War Trails maps were distributed last year alone and increased visitation to historic sites nationwide.
The new sign is located at 25450 E. Sayler’s Creek Road, Jetersville. For more information call Sailor’s Creek Battlefield State Park at (804) 561- 7510 or by visiting www.civilwartrails.org.
