The regional hoops playoff picture

All six public school varsity basketball teams in the Heart of Virginia will be competing in their respective regional tournaments across this Friday, Monday and Tuesday.

Leading the way among area teams are the Prince Edward County High School Lady Eagles (20-4) and the Cumberland County High School Dukes (12-8), who hold No. 1 seeds in their respective regional girls and boys competitions.

Though the Lady Eagles fell in the James River District tournament title game Monday, they had already wrapped up the regular season district title, and the loss did not influence their regional standing.

As the top seed on their side of the Region 2A girls tournament bracket, the Lady Eagles have a first-round bye, and Monday at 7 p.m., they will host the winner of Friday’s contest between Amelia County High School and Nottoway High School.

The Dukes lost in the district boys tournament semifinals to district regular season champ Goochland High School, but Cumberland remains in strong position entering the Region 1B boys tourney. On Tuesday at 6 p.m., the Dukes will host the winner of Saturday’s play-in game between No. 8 Rappahannock County High School and No. 9 Appomattox Regional Governor’s School (RGS).

The Cumberland Lady Dukes (6-14) hold the No. 4 seed in the Region 1B girls tourney and will host No. 5 Appomattox RGS on Monday at 6 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

The Prince Edward Eagles, the No. 5 seed on their side of the Region 2A boys tournament bracket, are set to visit No. 4 Nottoway on Friday at 6 p.m., making their final postseason run under the leadership of Head Coach James Scott, who announced he will retire from coaching basketball at the conclusion of this season.

The Buckingham County High School Lady Knights (11-10) hold the No. 6 seed in the Region 2C girls tournament, and they host No. 11 Nelson County High School on Friday at 6 p.m.
