A fire from a locomotive traveling eastbound on a line west of Farmville resulted in no injuries, Meherrin Fire & Rescue Chief and a director of public relations with Norfolk Southern confirmed Monday.

Meherrin Fire & Rescue Chief Trey Pyle said Tuesday that the incident took place at the 13000 block of County Line Road Monday.

“Meherrin (Fire & Rescue), Darlington Heights (Volunteer Fire Department) and Hampden-Sydney (Volunteer Fire Department) were dispatched at 6:23 p.m. to the 13000 block of County Line Road,” Pyle said in a statement. Pyle confirmed that the train was a freight train from Norfolk Southern, which was pulling coal cars.

“Fire was contained to the engine area of one locomotive and was out on arrival,” Pyle said. “Unknown what caused the fire at this time.”

Pyle said all of the units that responded to the fire had cleared at approximately 7:15 p.m.

Director of Public Relations Susan Terpay said a fire was reported on the second of two locomotive trains traveling through the area.

“The local fire department quickly assisted in extinguishing the fire,” Terpay said in a statement.

Terpay said the train crew was riding in the first locomotive.

“There were no injuries,” Terpay said.

She said the train continued its route following the incident.

“The 100-car coal train continued to Norfolk,” Terpay said.

Terpay said the cause of the fire is still being determined.
