Cumberland County High School’s varsity football team was hoping to enter its Region 1B first-round playoff game this week having earned its first victory of the season, but turnovers helped doom the Dukes to a 28-14 defeat Friday against visiting Randolph-Henry High School.
“I’m incredibly disappointed,” Cumberland Head Coach Edgar Knapp said. “We really thought that we’d come out ahead in that one. Some of our kids just played out of their mind on defense. K.J. Copeland and Davidrick Brooks just were all over the place making tackles. Ziahir (Berry) had the fumble recovery for a touchdown and then an interception.”
The game was tied 6-6 at halftime, and the Dukes went ahead briefly in the third quarter when senior Darius Kyle connected with junior Noah Bland on a touchdown pass.
With only six playoff-eligible football teams in Region 1B, No. 6 Cumberland (0-10) visits No. 3 Central Lunenburg High School (4-6) on Friday at 7 p.m.
