4-H to hold kick-off meeting

The Buckingham 4-H Livestock Club is having their kick-off club meeting for the 2017-18 year Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m. Youth are invited to attend to learn more about what the club offers. The meeting will be held at the B.A.R.N. Facility, located at 11851 West James Anderson Highway, in Buckingham, including a simple hot dog supper. Please RSVP by Tuesday to the Buckingham Extension Office at (434) 969-4261 to ensure an adequate headcount for the meal.

Participants must be 9 years or older to show in the Piedmont Area Junior Livestock Show, however, younger members are welcome to attend club meetings and events to learn prior to active livestock project participation. Club runs from October-May with the year culminating at the show in April. At the meeting, discussions will include plans for club meeting dates and events throughout the year, as well as details of the show for each species — beef, hog, sheep and goat. Buckingham 4-H Livestock Club leaders and agents include Kelly Snoddy, David Wise, Diane McLain, Jennifer Ligon, Ruth Wallace and Amber Anderson.

A free workshop on “Estate Planning Essentials: Steps to Protect You and Your Family” will be presented Oct. 12 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. This workshop, hosted by David Wise of DavidWise.com Insurance, LLC will take place at the Curdsville Community Center located at 122 School Road in Dillwyn.

In addition to David Wise, agribusiness and farm insurance specialist, guest speakers include James P. Seidl, business, estate and tax planning attorney, and Thomas I. Hill, certified public accountant, certified financial planner of Hill and Davis, CPA, P.C.

The FFA Chapter at Buckingham High School is hosting a 2017 car show scheduled Oct. 14 from noon-4 p.m. at Buckingham County High School. Classes include: 2017-10; 2009-00; 1999-90; 1989-80; 1979-70; 1969-60; 1950 and earlier. Also included are trucks, motorcycles, People’s Choice and Best in Show. In addition, the day will feature raffle prizes, a 50/50 raffle, bake sale and corn hole tournament. Live music from 2-4 p.m. Brunswick stew is ready by 1 p.m. Pre-order or purchase stew the day of show for $7 per quart. Proceeds go toward the FFA National Convention trip for the chapter to receive the Two Start National Chapter Award.
