Lawrence Christian McMurtray, 87, of Farmville, passed away on July 25, 2017.

He was born on December 25, 1929 in Salina, Kansas to the late Lawrence Perry McMurtray and Irene Mary Johnson McMurtray.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Austin Thomas McMurtray, John Lee McMurtray and a grandson Lyle Patrick McMurtray.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Joyce Miller McMurtray, four sons; Anthony C. McMurtray wife Suzanne from Ellicott City, MD, L. Patrick McMurtray from Westminster, MD, Shawn Robert McMurtray wife Mary Cam from Kill Devil Hills, NC., Mark Vincent McMurtray from Cary, NC, eight grandchildren; Michelle McMurtray from New York, NY, Karaya McMurtray from Raleigh, NC. Myranda McMurtray from Raleigh, NC, Alina McMurtray Jackson husband Chad from Dutton, VA; Aran P. McMurtray from Milton, FL; Brendan McMurtray from Baltimore, MD; Colin McMurtray from Ellicott City, MD; Luke Stalling McMurtray from San Diego, CA; three great grandchildren Hadyn Jackson, Raylan Jackson, Kaleigh McMurtray and a host of nieces and nephews.

Lawrence served in the U.S. Navy on submarine USS Steinaker (DDR86), he graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Industrial Technology. He was a plant manager for Pet Company, Purex Corporation, Raymond Metal Products and Skyline Steel Corporation.

He was active for many years in the Boy Scouts of America and was president of the Safety Council of Maryland.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Theresa’s Catholic Church Maintenance Fund or a charity of your choice.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 31, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. in St. Theresa’s Catholic Church. Family will receive friends at the church from 9–9:30 a.m. Interment will be held at 2 p.m. in Quantico National Cemetery.
