Summer camp experiences come alive at Longwood

Summer will be a time of fun and learning for area children enrolled in one of several summer day camps hosted by Longwood University’s Speech, Hearing and Learning Services.

During these popular camp experiences, Longwood faculty and graduate students teach important skills in a creative and engaging way. With camps for children ranging from age three to teenager, there is something for every child, according to a press release.

• Ages three years and six months to five years.

• July 11-Aug. 3, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9-11:45 a.m.

• $85 for first week, $65 each additional week

According to a Longwood press release, this camp promotes alphabet knowledge, phonological and phonemic awareness, concepts about print, developmental writing and language comprehension.

Camp L.E.G.O. (Language Enrichment through Games & Opportunities)

• Ages six-10

• July 11-Aug. 3, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9:15 a.m.-noon

• $75 for first week, $65 each additional week

According to the release, Camp LEGO targets language concepts in a fun, engaging environment and aims to enhance social communication skills.

Reader’s Theater

• Ages seven and up

• July 11-Aug. 3, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 1:30-4:15 p.m.

• $75 for first week, $65 each additional week

According to the release, this interactive camp enhances students’ reading fluency skills and confidence by having them practice reading with a purpose.

“Each week culminates in a performance for parents,” officials said in the release. “Reader’s Theater gives students a reason to read aloud. Registration is now open for the camps, which are conducted by Longwood Communication Sciences and Disorders graduate students and supervised by a speech-language pathologist faculty member.”

The release cited limited stipends are available for each camp, and families of Longwood employees receive a 10 percent discount. The deadline for registration is June 1.
