Eugene Lloyd ‘Gene’ Hartley

Eugene Lloyd “Gene” Hartley, 91 of Farmville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 22, 2017 at Heritage Hall, Blackstone. He was preceded in death by his parents, Phoebe Sorrells Hartley and Claude Allen Hartley and brothers, Floyd Earnest Hartley and Thomas Leech Hartley.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley Arlene Bryant Hartley; sister, Martha Jane Hartley McCloud of Hampton, TN; sons, Eugene L. Hartley Jr. and Floyd E. Hartley (Darlene) of Farmville, daughter, Brenda H. Clayton of Suffolk; grandchildren, Luke N. Kidd (Mary) of Suffolk, Kelly E. Anderson (Marcus) and Christopher F. Hartley of Farmville; as well as six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Gene was a Navy Veteran and was honorably discharged in May 1946. Following 30 years of devoted service to Longwood College, he retired as lead electrician in 1987 and spent many happy hours restoring his prized 1965 Ford Falcon, meeting friends at McDonalds for coffee and traveling the U.S. with Shirley.

The family extends its sincere appreciation to his Heritage Hall Hospice caregivers and staff for their compassionate and loving care and support.

A graveside service was held on Saturday, February 25 at Westview Cemetery.
