A five-alarm fire between Meherrin and Farmville displaced four people on Sunday afternoon.
The fire, reported at 553 Carriage Road off of U.S. 15 South, was reported at 12:54 p.m., according to Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Todd Pugh.
Volunteers from Meherrin, Farmville, Keysville and Darlington Heights responded, along with those from Hampden Sydney, Pugh said.
No one was injured in the fire, which is considered a total loss.
The home contained one story, along with a full basement, Pugh said.
“We believe the fire originated on the outside of the structure. The homeowners were home at the time and noticed the fire and evacuated,” Pugh said. “We don’t have an exact determination yet.”
He said, while in the basement, the homeowner noticed the fire on the outside of the home “through a picture window.”
According to Pugh, about 20,000 gallons of water was used to extinguish and fight the fire.
Pugh, the first on the scene, said the home was fully engulfed in flames when he arrived.
