Cumberland boys cross country team advances to states meet

The Cumberland High School varsity boys cross country team placed sixth in the Region 1A East meet on Tuesday at Panorama Farms in Earlysville to qualify for the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Group 1A state meet. The top six teams at the regional meet advanced to states. The Dukes finished with 129 points as a team, and they were led by Matthew Bapties, who finished third individually, and Jared Halvorsen, pictured above, who finished ninth. Both runners received all-region status and had previously been named All-Conference 42 and All-James River District. Bapties holds the titles of district champion and Runner of the Year, as well as conference champion and Runner of the Year. The VHSL Group 1A state meet is set for Friday at 1:45 p.m. at The Plains.
