Longwood sign vandalized

The recently installed Longwood University gateway sign has been vandalized over a series of nights, according to Director of Communications and Media Relations Matt McWilliams.
Some of the letters from “Longwood University” were stolen off the High Street brick gateway, McWilliams said. First, someone took the letter “D” earlier this week. By Tuesday morning, McWilliams said, the university noticed the “L” and “U” were gone.
Longwood is working to address the vandalism. They do not know at this time who has been taking the letters, though they are treating it as a vandalism case, McWilliams said.
“I think that the letters are not secured properly and we are working to fix that,” McWilliams said.
He said the university will work with the outside contractors who installed the letters to reinstall and secure them so they cannot be easily removed.
At this time, the letters are no longer on the brick sign. According to McWilliams, the university removed the remaining letters to restructure them for the more secure fit.
Contractors only finished the gateway and sign in August, as part of Longwood’s Master Plan, and ahead of the recently held Vice Presidential Debate.
