The Buckingham County High School varsity football team fell 49-8 to host Goochland High School on Friday night, but the loss took a backseat in importance after serious injuries occurred to three Knights players midway through the fourth quarter.

On a Bulldogs running play, Buckingham defensive linemen Brycen Newby, Javon Jones and Brandon Moseley converged on the runner and ended up hitting one another.

“They all kind of absorbed the same impact because it didn’t go anywhere, it was transferred in a triangle,” Knights Head Coach Joshua Wallace said.

All three players were carried out on stretchers. One suffered a neck injury and concussion, while the other two suffered severe concussions.

They have since been released from the hospital and are home recovering.

Though half the quarter was left to be played Friday, the game was called at that point.

Wallace had little comment on the football side of things given the serious nature of what had happened to his players.

“We had a freak accident happen and football went out the window for me at that point in time,” he said.

Buckingham (1-6) will look to rebound Friday when it hosts Amelia County High School at 7 p.m.
