Betty Joe Sams Rogers

Betty Joe Sams Rogers, 90, of 1041 News Ferry Trail, South Boston, and formerly of Farmville, died on October 3, 2016 at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Hamblen County, TN on March 4, 1926. Mrs. Rogers was the daughter of the late Joe Berry Sams and Marie Clark Sams, and was married to the late Bissell Vernon “Buck” Rogers. She was a member of Farmville United Methodist, and a Watch Care member at Main Street United Methodist Church in South Boston.

Mrs. Rogers earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Tennessee and a Master’s degree from the University of Virginia. She worked as a home demonstration agent and also taught elementary school in Louisa County. Her loves included collecting antiques, gardening and spending time with her family and pets.

She is survived by her children, two daughters, Debbie Rogers Taylor and husband, Mike of Hurt and Suzanne Rogers Powell and husband, Robert of South Boston; a son, Christopher Alan Rogers and wife, Jan of Farmville; five grandchildren, Sarah Oliver and husband, Travis, Matt Taylor and wife, Stephanie,

Thomas and Joe Rogers, and Holt Powell; great-grandsons, Andy Taylor and Taylor Oliver; a brother, Roy Sams and wife, Terry; two sisters, Christine Lovelace and Nancy Fox and husband, Buford; three sisters-in-law, Barbara Sue Sams, Margie Sams and Wendy Sams all of TN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Tommy Sams, Robert Sams and Jack Sams and a brother-in-law, Bill Lovelace.

A graveside service will be held at French Broad Baptist Cemetery in Dandridge, TN on November 6, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Bob Brown officiating.
