Bapties leads Cumberland conference cross country honorees

Cumberland High School senior Matthew Bapties, center, followed his James River District Cross Country championship by winning the Conference 42 title Wednesday afternoon at Beaverdam Park. He helped the Cumberland boys team place second out of five teams, finishing with 45 points, two points ahead of Mathews High School and five points behind West Point High School, which had fast enough times from its runners to keep its score to 40 points. Bapties, who was named Conference Runner of the Year, was also named all-conference along with Hunter Cochran, left, and Jared Halvorsen, right. The Cumberland girls team finished fourth out of five squads, ending up with 79 points, behind Mathews (17), West Point (64) and Middlesex High School (76). Tayanna Bradley and Munirah Fulani of the Lady Dukes made the all-conference team.
