John Marshall Lee, 86, formerly of Farmville, died Thursday, September 22, 2016. He was born and raised in Charlottesville, the last of Edwin Gray Lee and Estelle Marshall Behrendt Lee’s six children.  Jack, as he was known, lived most of his life in Farmville with his late wife Sally “Toddy” Schuyler Hughes Lee. There they raised two children.

He is survived by his daughter, Sally “Missy” Lee Roberts (Matson) of Richmond; and son, John Marshall Lee Jr. (Denise) of Danville; and four grandchildren, Matson Lamar Roberts Jr., Sally Meriwether Roberts, Caroline Hannah Lee and Allison Ambler Lee.

Mr. Lee was a graduate of Episcopal High School and the University of Virginia. Retiring as Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, he trained and graduated from the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, KS.

He began his banking career at National Bank and Trust Company in Charlottesville. In 1967, he joined the First National Bank of Farmville and in 1986 was named President and CEO of First Virginia Bank-Southside. Throughout his life he was active in his community. He was past president of the Farmville Rotary Club, a director of the Farmville Chamber of Commerce, Meals on Wheels driver and held leadership positions on many other community boards.  Mr. Lee was a participant and lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. As an Eagle Scout, he was one of two Virginia Scouts to first receive the Order of the Arrow’s highest honor, the Vigil Honor.

Mr. Lee was also a member of the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Sons of the Revolution and the Society of the Lees of Virginia, where he served as secretary. As a longtime member of Johns Memorial Episcopal Church in Farmville, he served as a vestry member and treasurer.

Visitation will be Friday, September 30 at Puckett Funeral Home in Farmville from 6 p.m.-8 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at Johns Memorial Church on October 1 at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow. Burial will be at Monticello Memory Gardens in Charlottesville at 3 pm.
