Monday, the Buckingham/Dillwyn Garden Club will hold its first meeting of the new term at 10 a.m. at Maysville Manor, adjacent to the Buckingham Court House. Jo Ann Jones, a Master Naturalist, will present a program on butterflies. Any resident of Buckingham who is interested in gardening and shares a love of growing things is invited to join. Most meetings are held at the Buckingham Arts Center, with the exception of field trips, which take place at various times. For additional information, contact co-presidents Barbara at (434) 547-8997 or Glenda at (434) 983-7673.
The annual Fall Farm Fest is coming up Saturday, Oct. 1, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Historic Village at Lee Wayside, 84 Wayside Road, Buckingham. Co-sponsored by the Buckingham County Farm Bureau and Historic Buckingham Inc., the fest will feature farm animals, food, buggy rides, games for kids, the Village blacksmith, antique tractors, live music, exhibits, plants and much more. There will be no admission fee, but donations are appreciated. For more information call (434) 969-4355 or (434) 547-2296.
Libraries offer far more than books. Indeed, there is a lot of news from the Buckingham Library where computer classes have resumed Wednesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. and Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. and will continue through November. The first few classes cover computer basics. For more information call the library (434) 983-3848 or drop by and sign up to guarantee a seat. After the summer break, story time with new storyteller Megan Almond returns to the library every Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. Beginning Oct. 6, Megan will also offer a late library night every first and third Thursday from 7-8 p.m. This program will focus on school-aged children with something for preschoolers as well.
Beginning Saturday, a new second Saturday family program also begins at the Buckingham library. From 10 a.m.-4 p.m., there will be food, fun, games, a movie and prizes — all with a 1970s theme. The 1978 movie, “The Cat from Outer Space,” is a science fiction comedy with an all-star cast, including, of course, a cat in the lead role. They don’t make campy comedies for kids — of all ages — like this anymore.
Try your hand at the ’70s trivia contest through Saturday, and see whether you can identify all 20 photos from the 70s. You could win a groovy prize. Call the library at (434) 983-3848 for more information about this and the other special programs happening now at the library.
The Woman’s Club of Buckingham County GFWC will hold its first meeting of the new term as a September tea on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Buckingham Art Center. Formed in 1954, the club is a service organization open to all women in the area. Each fall, there is a “Curious Corner Store” fundraiser and a large art show open to the club, schools and community. Visitors are invited to join for the fun, friendship and to find out about the other wonderful things offered. For additional information call Mary at (434) 969-2888 or Zanie at (434) 983-3875.
