The Farmville Volunteer Fire Department (FVFD) hosted the 61st annual Southside Virginia Volunteer Firefighter Association convention on Sept. 17 — the first time the FVFD has hosted the convention in 20 years, according to Assistant. Chief Dean Farmer. A seven-event firefighting competition highlighted the convention, with a dozen fire, emergency management services and fire/rescue departments teams vying. The FVFD placed first in two of the competition events: 4-person ladder and best ladder truck. Other competitions included 4- and 6-person hose, 2-person rapid intervention, 1-person forced entry and team bucket brigade.
