Backyard Campout on tap at Sailor’s Creek

Published 8:43 pm Thursday, June 16, 2016

On Saturday, June 25, Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park will host a daylong living-history program for the “Great American Backyard Campout.” From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. representatives from the Confederate States Marines in period dress will set up camp at the Visitor’s Center to explain what it was like to be a soldier on garrison duty during the Civil War. Experience camp-life culture in constructing a shelter, using rudimentary cooking implements and maintaining camaraderie and morale through card-playing and music. Being on alert to pack up and quickly fall in with the rest of the army marching to battle was the everyday norm. This is a free family and pet-friendly program. Contact the park’s visitor center at (804) 561-7510 or email sailorscreek@dcr.virginia.gov for questions.
