Aided by a three-hit shutout from southpaw Elizabeth McCarthy and a one-out RBI walk from freshman Kaylynn Batten in the top of the seventh, Longwood University’s softball team captured the program’s second straight Big South regular season championship by winning game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, 1-0, over host Coastal Carolina. The Lancers lost game two 7-4 and fell 9-2 on Sunday against the Chanticleers, but Longwood needed only the one win to clinch the title.

In her first career victory over the Chanticleers, McCarthy became the second player in program history to reach the 500-strikeout mark, joining Briana Wells. McCarthy tossed a complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts and just one walk.

Longwood will open play in the Big South Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C., on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of eighth-seeded Gardner-Webb and ninth-seeded Winthrop.
