Historic Village makes plans for Mayfest

Hatton Ferry has now re-opened for the season. The only poled ferry still in operation in the U.S., the Hatton Ferry crosses the James River between Buckingham and Albemarle Counties, 20 miles north of Dillwyn. Weather and river conditions permitting, the ferry generally operates on Saturdays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and on Sundays from noon-5 p.m. Ferry service for special tours and times can be arranged. A donation of $5 per person or $10 per vehicle is requested. All donations go toward the upkeep, maintenance and continued operation of the ferry. Before your visit, call the Albemarle-Charlottesville Historical Society at (434) 296-1492 or email info@thehattonferry.org to ensure that the ferry is in service.
Historic Buckingham’s spring membership meeting will take place, Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Ellis Acres Memorial Park, 245 Camden Street, Dillwyn. Wilbert Dean will speak on the history of the Buckingham County Training School and one of its main founders, the Rev. Stephen J. Ellis. The Buckingham Baptist Church, 24234 N. James Madison Hwy., New Canton, will hold its spring revival Sunday through Wednesday at 7 p.m. There will be a kick off song service with the Oak Hill Boys Sunday at 11 a.m., followed by a covered-dish lunch. Co-sponsored by Historic Buckingham and the Buckingham County Chamber of Commerce, the annual Mayfest will take place May 14 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Historic Village. The festival will feature music by the Richmond Band and Cabin Creek, and include food, crafts, children’s games and educational exhibits, and for the first time this year, a climbing wall. Ellis Acres Park, 245 Camden Street, Dillwyn, is having a spring party on Friday, April 29, from 6 to 9 p.m. Old and new friends are invited. The CVCHC Beulah M. Wiley Fitness Center, 25892 N. James Madison Hwy., New Canton, is hosting a variety of free things to do to stay active and improve health.
