Spring sports sign ups set; Oyster supper planned

The George Lodge #32 is having its annual Oyster Supper on Saturday, Feb. 20, at 4 p.m. at Glenmore United Methodist Church located on Rt. 602 in Buckingham.  The cost is by donation with the proceeds going to the Glenmore United Methodist Church and to George Lodge.  For more information contact Harry Bryant at (434) 969-4459.

Buckingham County Parks and Recreation is gearing up for warmer weather by announcing several sign-up dates for sports and other recreational opportunities. Sign-up for spring baseball and softball will be held at Buckingham Middle School on consecutive Saturdays: Feb. 13, Feb. 20 and Feb. 27, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.  The cost is $55. Baseball sign-ups are for boys and girls, ages 4-12 (as of May 1). Softball sign-ups are for girls ages 4-18 (as of Jan. 1).  Registration forms can be found online at www.buckinghamcountyva.org (under “county services” menu click the “recreation” tab). Payment must be mailed in with registration forms to P.O. Box 252, Buckingham, Va. 23921, or forms can be dropped off on one of the signup dates listed above. Spring soccer sign-ups and practice will begin Tuesday, March 8, at 5:30 p.m. behind the Old Dillwyn Primary School. Also available is a program of individual baseball instruction called “Big League Dreams” that includes fundamentals such as pitching, hitting and fielding as well as video analysis. Instruction is by appointment at a cost of $35 for a one-hour private lesson with discounts available for siblings. For information or appointment call Tim Hoag, (843) 340-5246.

Moreover, if parents would like to have a night out on the town or maybe just enjoy a quiet evening at home, they can sign up for a “Parents Night Out, Kids Night In” event. The kids will be engaged in arts and crafts activities, time in the gym, enjoying snacks and watching a movie. Members of New Hope Baptist Church, 1909 Cartersville Road, invite the community to join them for their annual black history celebration on Saturday at 4 p.m. Theme for this year’s celebration is: “Hold on — Help Is on the Way.”  Guest minister is the Rev. Dr. Alvin Edwards Sr. of Charlottesville.  Music for the celebration will be provided by the Buckingham Community Choir. A fellowship hour will follow.
