Beekeeping course to be offered

Heart of Virginia Beekeepers will host a comprehensive class, “Practical Beekeeping for Beginners,” starting Tuesday, Feb. 2, 7-9 p.m.  Class duration is eight weeks plus a field day.

It will be held at the Prince Edward Extension Office, 100 Dominion Drive, Farmville.

This class is specifically intended for those who plan to start honeybee colonies.

Material covered will include the history of honey bees, honey bee life cycle, seasonal management, equipment and supplies needed, integrated and sustainable management techniques for optimal colony health, as well as a hands-on session for establishing new colonies. 

The tuition of $90 covers one family unit and includes three class textbooks, course notebook and CD with presentation summaries, additional resources, and one-year membership in local beekeeping club.

A Virginia State Beekeepers Association certified journeyman beekeeper will teach the class. Class size is limited, and pre-registration is required.
