BUCKINGHAM — A 27-year-old Cumberland man is facing additional charges in connection with allegedly crashing his car into a church cemetery and striking several headstones at Enon Baptist Church.

Marcus D. Bartee, of Cumberland, is charged with giving a false report to police, trespassing in a cemetery at night, unlawful damage, not reporting an accident and two counts of reckless driving.

The incident was reported on Dec. 26 on Route 640, less than one mile west of Route 633, according to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

According to Buckingham Sheriff William G. “Billy” Kidd Jr., three tombstones were damaged.

Speed is a factor in the crash, she said.

“A 1994 Toyota Camry was traveling east on Route 640, when the vehicle ran off the left side of the road and into a cemetery. The car struck several tombstones before coming to a stop,” Geller said.

Bartee was not injured in the crash, she said.
