Traffic was backed up in Farmville Thursday afternoon after a vehicle partially sank into a hole on North Street caused by a water leak.

At about 5:30 p.m. police closed North Street between North Main and West Third streets, resulting in a detour. Part of West Third Street near downtown Farmville was previously closed.

According to Town Manager Gerald Spates the hole was caused a water leak underneath. “I wouldn’t say it’s real bad. We’re gonna fix it,” he said of the leak.

“A car drove into it,” Spates said. “It’s just a cave in from a water leak.”

The front-right tire of the vehicle sank into an hole in the middle of the road where water could be seen gushing below.

The driver of the vehicle told The Herald that she had taken off from a stopped position when her car went into the hole.
