UDC Holds Iron Cross Ceremony In Buckingham

The Stonewall Jackson Chapter 20, District of Columbia Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy recently conducted an Iron Cross Placement Ceremony on the grave in honor and memory of Sgt. Walter Travis Hanes, Company I, 4th Virginia Calvary, Confederate States of America. He was from Cumberland County and is buried at Trinity Presbyterian Church, New Canton, Buckingham County, where he and his family were members. Sgt. Hanes served under Gen. Fitzhugh Lee as a cavalry scout. He also served with Mosby’s Raiders and was wounded in battle several times. Local living relatives include members of the Lancaster and Wall families. In attendance at the ceremony were, from left, Steve Wall, great-great-grandson; Danny Jefferies, great-great-grandson; Jody Jefferies, great-great-great-granddaughter; Jackson Miller, great-great-great-grandson; Ella Miller, great-great-great-granddaughter; June Lancaster Miller, great-granddaughter; and Jeff Jefferies, great-grandson.
