FARMVILLE — Williamsburg native Alex Spirn stole the championship title in July’s Fishin’ Pig Ping Pong Tournament.

The double-elimination tournament had a record-breaking turnout with 18 players competing, all for the glory of winning the Ping Pong Championship belt.

However, they would have a hard time succeeding against Spirn, who previously lived in Farmville for nine years and had never lost the tournament while living in the area.

Spirn, who did not participate in the June tournament, returned after hearing that his friend Bruce Bogese, of Farmville, had won the tournament in his absence.

“I felt I had to come back and prove a point,” he said.

Spirn started his playoff journey winning four straight games, which ensured his spot in the championship round.

Bogese had also made his way through the bracket by winning his first match. He was defeated in the second round of the bracket by Spirn. He then went on to win four matches, before being knocked out of the tournament by John Pruitt.

Pruitt had also been defeated by Spirn earlier in the tournament after winning three matches. He then defeated Bogese for the chance to compete in the championship round.

Although Pruitt put up a strong fight, Spirn found success in the final match and was crowned the champion. “The best man won and that is all there is to say,” Bogese said.

Spirn said that “Bruce and John were both great, great competitors. But, the best thing about it is that the competition is growing. Hopefully, it will grow even more from here.”

Fishin’ Pig’s August Ping Pong Tournament will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16.
