The Educational Foundation of the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (VASWCD) is now offering a new scholarship program in honor and memory of Dora Crute Chaffin, wife of Wilkie Chaffin, of Pamplin.
Wilkie Chaffin, former president of the VASWCD and current president of the Educational Foundation, recently endowed the Dora Chaffin Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) Employee/Dependent Scholarships (thethe Dora Chaffin Scholarships”). The Dora Chaffin Scholarships are designed to help provide financial support to Soil and Water Conservation District employees pursuing college degrees to enhance their district job skills or to members of the employees’ families.
In addition, since 2003 the VASWCD Educational Foundation has presented the Chaffin Soil and Water Conservation District Employee of the Year awards. Dora and Wilkie Chaffin recommended the establishment of these awards and offered to provide funding. The VASWCD Board endorsed this offer and approved a set of awards. Every year full-time District employees compete for three monetary awards for exemplary contributions toward meeting the goals of their individual Conservation Districts.
Dr. Chaffin currently serves locally on the Piedmont SWCD board as director and has acted as treasurer of the board since 2002. He joined the district in 1997 as an associate director, was appointed as a director in 2001, and has served as an elected director representing Prince Edward County since 2003.
