PEFYA Angels Win State Championship

BUCKINGHAM — The Prince Edward-Farmville Youth Association (PEFYA) Angels 10-and-under softball team defeated Montgomery County 4-1 on Monday night, winning the Angels X-Play State Championship.

The game got off to a slow start, as neither team scored until the fourth inning.

PEFYA scored all four of its runs in that inning, with Alyson Lucas, Kyla Edmonds, Alani Walton and Sidney Baldwin crossing the plate. Montgomery County scored its run in the fifth inning.

Lucas also pitched the entire championship game and had six strikeouts.

Prior to Monday night, the Angels defeated three teams to land in the championship game. PEFYA took a 20-5 win over Buckingham on Friday, defeated Charlotte County 18-1 Saturday morning and then blanked Montgomery County 11-0 on Saturday afternoon.

During the tournament, PEFYA had 26 strikeouts over 16 innings.

Danner Allen pitched the shutout against Montgomery County and had eight strikeouts that game.

The team also had 42 base hits in its four games.

With the state championship win, the Angels advance to the World Series in Moore County, N.C., beginning on Friday, Aug. 7.
