On June 25, the Rotary Club of Farmville held their annual year-end banquet at Charley’s Waterfront Cafe.
Rotarian Debbie Savage was the master of ceremonies for her final meeting as club president. Under her guidance the past year, the club raised close to $10,000 for local charities. Part of this success was due to a third major fundraising event, The Farmville Beer Fest. The Second Annual Farmville Beer Fest will be held Saturday, September 12, from 2-7 p.m. at the Five County Fairgrounds.
Due to increased fundraising, the club was also able to start an annual Club service project. The Rotary Book Give Away consisted of club members reading to and giving away books to all second-graders at Cumberland and Prince Edward County Schools.
John Miller presented Savage with a gavel in appreciation of her service as club president.
Savage began the meeting by honoring members who contributed to the success of the club during the past year. Morgan Greer was recognized as New Rotarian of the Year. He served as chairman of the Pancake Breakfast fundraiser and will be a board member for the coming Rotary year.
Jeffrey Sargent was recognized as the “Rotarian of the Year.” Sargent was chairman of the Farmville Beer Fest and took charge of the Rotary Book Give Away.
Jalen Sargent, Jeff’s 8-year-old son, was named Honorary Rotarian for his eagerness and hard work helping with club fundraisers.
“His enthusiasm and ability to put ‘Service Above Self’ at such a young age gives us hope for the future of Rotary and our community,” a Rotary spokesperson said.
The evening concluded with induction of incoming President Jeffrey Sargent. He promised to continue to push the club to increase membership and build community awareness and impact.
