CUMBERLAND — A Cumberland County man was killed while cutting down a tree at end of Atkins Road on July 22.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Samuel Monroe Sr. died during the incident, reported at 95 Atkins Road at approximately 8:35 p.m.

“Apparently [he] got hung up or binded up somehow or another,” said Sheriff Darrell Hodges, noting that the tree reportedly “kicked back out and caught him.”

Hodges said Monroe died on scene.
