Eagles Excel At State Meet

Prince Edward track teams participated in the 2A State Track meet that was held at Radford University on June 5-6. The boys team placed third overall. Leading the way for the boys was Darkeem Gray. He won the 100-meters for the second consecutive year. In the process he broke the old school record held by Virginia Commonwealth University grad DeAngelo Wilson.

Gray’s time was 10.60. He also placed second in the 200-meters with a personal best time of 21.94. The boys 4×100-meter relay team was also named state champions.

They ran a time of 43.51 seconds. That team consisted of Deron Baugh, Brandon Scott, Dushawn Williams and Gray. Rayshawn Wheeler placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 134 feet. Baugh also placed seventh in the long jump.

The girls team finished eighteenth overall. Individually freshman Monteria Wynn placed sixth in the 400-meters event with a time of 1:02. Junior Makayla Booker was seventh in the triple jump. The girls 4×100 relay team placed sixth with a time of 51.70. That team consisted of Eunity Woodard, Booker, Cordelia Morgan and Tanasia Miller

During the regional meet there were four regional champions. Gray was the regional champion in the 100-meter event. The boys 4×100-meter relay team was also named regional champs.

Wheeler won the boys discus and Wynn won the girls 400-meter event. Wheeler threw 143 feet and 4 inches. Wynn ran a time of 1:00.66. Other notable performances were by Miller and Booker in the long jump.

The both jumped PR’s of 17’4 and 16’5.5 respectively. Delmont Gray threw a PR of 122’ in the discus but did not advance to the state meet.
