FARMVILLE — Candidates running for mayor have been invited to a debate on Tuesday night, April 29, a week before the May 6 election.

Two of the three candidates, Carl U. Eggleston and David E. Whitus, have accepted the invitation and will appear at the 7-8 p.m. event to be held at the Farmville Train Station and broadcast live by debate host WVHL, 92.9 FM.

The third candidate, Margaret Taylor-Collins, told The Herald on Wednesday that she has long-standing dental surgery scheduled and cannot attend.

WVHL is looking to the public for questions to ask the mayoral candidates, who will give opening and closing remarks, as well as have time for rebuttal during the question and answer portion of the debate.

“We are accepting questions,” said WVHL’s Larry Armes, who will moderate the event. “They can either email them directly to me. My email address is la@wvhl.net. Or they can mail them in to our address, which is Post Office Drawer T (Farmville, Virginia 23901).”

The debate is free and open to the public. The train station’s maximum capacity for such an event is 150 people.

The May 6 election will determine who succeeds Mayor Sydnor C. Newman, Jr., who is not running for another term. Mayor Newman will step down on June 30 after 16 years as mayor.
