H-SC Baseball Takes 10-1 Victory Over Birmingham Southern

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Hampden-Sydney continues its hot start to the season with a 10-1 victory over #21 Birmingham Southern. With the win, improving the Tigers to 15-3, head coach Jeff Kinne is now tied with Stokeley Fulton as the program's winningest coach with 225.
The Tigers won their fourth straight game while sweeping the competition in their three-game trip south behind hot bats and an impressive eight inning win on the mound for freshman Trevor Otey (Williamsburg/Christchurch). Otey allowed just one run on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts while improving his record to 4-0.
Offensively, the Tigers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, putting the first run on the board in the top of the first inning after Christian Hamlett (Midlothian/Cosby) used an RBI-double to score Hunter Lewis (Newport News/Menchville).
Lewis batted in a run in the second inning, batting in Jackson Rogers (Sterling/Potomac Falls) as part of the Tigers' five-run second. Andrew Tucker (Fincastle/James River) started off the scoring by stealing third as Rogers stole second, just before being batted in by Lewis. Jeff Gray (Newport News/Menchville) and Nathan Chamberlin (Chesterfield/Virginia Wesleyan) each batted in runs with a walk and single, respectively; Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) and Hamlett were the beneficiaries, each crossing the plate.
Tucker scored again in the third, upping the lead to 7-0 after taking off from third on a wild pitch.
The Tigers struck again in the fourth with Hamlett and Chamberlin both crossing the plate for the second time.
Hamlett helped another run score, batting in his second of the night on a single that scored Wiles in the top of the seventh.
On the night, the Tigers recorded 14 hits, including a 4-for-5 night from Lewis. The senior also scored two runs and batted one in. Hamlett and Rogers both went 3-for-5 while Hamlett scored two and batted in two more.
The Tigers will return home, Saturday, March 15, as they host the Hornets of Shenandoah University for a double header starting at noon.
