CUMBERLAND, October 29 — Heaven gained an angel, Jeannie E. Whitaker, 43, of Cumberland, who departed this life Saturday, October 26, 2013. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. The family takes comfort in knowing that she is at peace, no more pain and suffering.

She was born January 7, 1970 in Germany to George D. Whitaker and Erma Hocutt Jones. Mrs. Whitaker was the wife of Ray Matthews Jr. She worked as a hairdresser and cosmetologist.

She is survived by her mother, Erma H. Jones and stepfather, John Jones of Dinwiddie; her husband, Ray Matthews Jr. of Cumberland; daughter, Jennifer Elizabeth Whitaker of Cumberland; brother, Adam Whitaker of Chesterfield; sister, Misty Hodges of Florida; two stepdaughters, Brandy Rhoten of Cumberland and Michelle Matthews of Chesterfield and six grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 1, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home.

Family will receive friends on Friday from 12 p.m.-2 p.m. at the funeral home.
