DILLWYN, July 2 – Elizabeth Jane Dunkum Charlton Guthrie, 86, of Dillwyn passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, June 30, 2013. She was the widow of Timothy R. Charlton and Forrest Guthrie, III.
She was a 1944 graduate of Buckingham Central High School, a 1948 graduate of VCU with a B.S. in Applied Science, a 1963 graduate of the College of William and Mary with a M.Ed. in Supervisor and Administration. She was employed by York County Public Schools as a science and chemistry teacher and Head of the department from 1954-1964, as a Secondary Supervisor from 1964-1975, and as an Associate principal in 1976.
Mrs. Guthrie was a member of Dillwyn First Baptist Church and then later Salem United Methodist Church, Dillwyn. She was co-founding member of the Virginia Living Museum, formally known as the Peninsula Science and Nature Center; a member of Kappa Delta Pi of the College of William and Mary and the Delta Kappa Gamma Honor of Society for Women Teachers. She was recognized in the Who's Who of American Women. She was a member of the Buckingham County Women's Club and the Dillwyn Garden Club.
She is survived by a daughter, Terri Wakefield of Saco, ME; two grandchildren, Renae Rose of Ivor and Michael Rose of Londonderry, NH; six great-grandchildren; many loved cousins, nieces and nephews; longtime friend, Mattie Johnson and her loving caregivers, Jerri Cook, Donna Bowman and Ann Reynolds.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 3 at 11 a.m. at Salem United Methodist Church with private interment to follow.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday (tonight) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Buckingham County Volunteer Rescue Squad.
