PE Hoops Teams Get Off To Solid Start

Note: The following is a weekly update produced by the Prince Edward County High School Athletics Department for the Farmville Herald.
The Prince Edward County High School boys basketball team began its season with three victories in non-district play last week. The PECHS girls team went 2-1 in the first week of play.
Boys Basketball
PE 56, Randolph-Henry 40
The Prince Edward boys varsity basketball team won its first game of the season at Randolph Henry Monday night 56-40. The game started with a sluggish pace as Prince Edward set the defensive tone early, only allowing one point over the first six minutes. Things heated up in the second quarter, as both teams entered the intermission dead-locked at 21.
The Eagles made some halftime adjustments and caused numerous Statesmen turnovers. The Eagles went on a huge third quarter run and held on to get the victory. Teequan Banks led all scorers with 16 points. Vilontae Eanes added nine, Marquise Fitzgerald and Antonio Jones each added seven.
The Eagles' 58-38 victory over Cumberland was highlighted in last Friday's edition of The Herald, and Friday's 55-45 victory over the Dukes is in this edition in a separate article.
Girls Basketball
PE 53, Randolph-Henry 45
The Lady Eagles defeated Randolph-Henry on Monday night 53-45. The score was close for the majority of the game, but the Lady Eagles increased the intensity on both defense and offense to pull away from for the win. Pashion Banks and Ashley Hamlin led the Lady Eagles with 15 points apiece, while Tamera Langhorne added 10 points.
Cumberland 42, PE 36
The Eagles dropped their first contest of the young season in a 42-36 loss to Cumberland on Wednesday night.
PE got into foul trouble early in the first half but went into the locker down by only one point. The Eagles battled injuries and foul trouble throughout the game but Cumberland was able to hold off the hosts and claim the six-point victory.
Banks led the team with 11 points but had to leave the game in the fourth quarter with a sprained ankle. Daneisha Bowles scored eight points while Hamlin and Tamera Langhorne added six points apiece.
Cumberland was led by Anneesha Harris, who scored a game-high 21 points, while Ivy Arbaugh added seven and Mackenzie Parker scored six.
PE 46, Cumberland 38
The Eagles avenged Wednesday's loss with a come-from-behind 46-38 victory over the Dukes on Friday night.
After trailing 24-17 at half and 34-30 after three quarters, the Eagles went on a 16-4 fourth quarter run to pull out the victory.
The Eagles were led in scoring by Langhorne with 18 points followed by Hamlin with 11 and Bowles with 10 points.
The Prince Edward junior varsity girls moved to 3-0 with a 34-29 victory over Cumberland.
The Eagles were led in scoring by Ikierra Scott with 18 points followed by Shakira Banks with eight.
Indoor Track
The Prince Edward indoor track teams traveled to a Southside District meet held at Greensville.
Greensville won the boys meet with 73 points, while Prince Edward scored 28, Brunswick 24 and Nottoway seven.
Ajavious Watkins won in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, seven inches, and the 4×200 meter relay team of Deron Baugh, Jevon Jackson, Devonte Wardell, and My'Qual Lee also won.
Brunswick won the girls meet with 39 team points, and was followed by Greensville's 17, PE's 13 and Nottoway's nine points.
PE's Tanasia Miller won in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, three inches.
