Cumberland Parade Cleared For Take-Off
Published 5:22 pm Thursday, December 6, 2012
CUMBERLAND – The Cumberland Christmas Parade is set for take-off this Sunday at 2 p.m. The parade will begin with the flight of a CENTRA Southside Community Hospital helicopter from the front field of the Cumberland High School down the parade route. The route extends down Route 60 from NAPA, past the Courthouse and ends around Central Virginia Bank.
The parade will begin with a stagecoach and horses and end with Santa himself. And, of course, the first place band winners of last week's Farmville Christmas Parade, The Magnificent Marching Dukes, will return in victory to play for their hometown. With 90 entries listed in this year's line-up, the parade is sure to provide a little something for everyone.
The themes this year are focused on nature, with “Green Christmas” and “Forestry Friends” as two options for float decorations.
Cars to be judged will be lined up at NAPA Auto Parts by 1 p.m. All other participants will take their places by 1:30.
Judy Ownby will be the Grand Marshal this year. Secretary of the Christmas Parade Committee, Barbara Gamage, reported to The Herald that for the last few years the committee has decided to honor local residents by naming them the grand marshal.
Ownby, a county employee for over 20 years and recently retired county administrator, was selected by the Christmas Parade Committee “for her many years of service to Cumberland County. Working for the county from 1991 until her retirement last year, Ms. Ownby has lived in Cumberland for many years and takes an interest in all aspects of the county.”
