Cumberland's Horton Wins JRD Cross Country Meet

Cumberland High School junior Matthew Horton won the boys 5k event at the James River District Cross Country Meet held on Wednesday at Pocahontas State Park in Chesterfield. Horton, who ran the course in 17:45.32, was also voted the district's Runner of the Year.
Amelia County High School freshman Brooke Trainham ran away with the girls 5k event to take JRD Championship and Runner of the Year awards.
In addition to Horton, Cumberland's John Bapties and Buckingham's Abigail Reid qualified for their respective Region B Meets.
Goochland High School head coach Henry Jones was named the Girls and Boys JRD Coach of the Year.
Goochland swept both boys and girls team competitions. The GHS girls tallied 40 points to edge Amelia's 43. Nottoway turned in an 80, Randolph-Henry 93, Bluestone 108 and Cumberland 147.
The Bulldogs tallied 15 points in the boys competition. Amelia was second with 70 points, and was followed by Randolph-Henry, Bluestone 108, Nottoway 108, and Buckingham 139.
