PAMPLIN, Feb. 21 – Nancy Carol Smith VanDerVeer, 55, of Pamplin, died at her residence early Sunday morning February 19, 2012 following a battle with cancer. She was the wife of Norman M. VanDerVeer Jr.

Mrs. VanDerVeer was born in Halifax County on August 26, 1956, a daughter of the late Elsie Ramsey and Paul Henry Smith. She was a member of Elon Baptist Church and an employee of the Post Office at Hampden-Sydney College.

In addition to her husband, Norman, she is survived by her son, Barry W. VanDerVeer of Pamplin; her dog, Roscoe whom she thought of as a son; two brothers, Larry P. Smith and wife, Rochelle of Pamplin and Ryland L. Smith and wife, Beckie of Clarksville; three sisters, Carolyn S. Hamilton and husband, Bill, Shelby S. Atkins and husband, Timmy all of Darlington Heights and Darlene S. Gamez and husband, Oscar of Spring, TX; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Norman and Joyce VanDerVeer; three sisters-in-law, Cora V. St. John and husband, Carroll, Marjorie V. Finch and husband, Doug, and Gina V. Trent and husband, Johnny all of Charlotte Court House and two very special friends, Eleanor Nash and Cookie Seamster. She dearly loved her many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 21 at Spring Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Dwayne Stinson, the Rev. Paul McLinden and the Rev. Anthony Reeves. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.<br />
The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home Monday night, February 20 from 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence.
