BUCKINGHAM ― If you are looking for some help with all that Thanksgiving baking, here's a great way to pick-up some homemade desserts and baked goods while helping raise funds for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life/Buckingham.

The Citizens in Action, CIA, Relay for Life Team is sponsoring a bake sale in front of Farmers Food on Saturday, November 19, beginning at 7:30 a.m. until all items are sold.

All proceeds will benefit Buckingham's Relay for Life.

Girls' Basketball Camp Ages 8-15

On Saturday, November 19, girls ages eight through 15 have the opportunity to participate in the Buckingham Instructional Girls Basketball Camp. Hosted at Buckingham County Middle School, the camp will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Cost is $5; and, participants must bring a bag lunch.

During the one-day camp, participants will be taught basketball skills including shooting, passing, free throw shooting, block-outs, defense, and team play. Players will divided into groups and will rotate through all skill stations.

Soup and Grilled Cheese Supper

On Saturday, November 19, beginning at 6 p.m., at Buckingham County Middle School, Spreading Gods Gifts is hosting a Soup and Grilled Cheese Supper to help raise funds for the great work this non-profit Christian-based organization does in our community.

The menu features vegetable beef soup, grilled cheese sandwiches, crackers, and beverages.

After the meal, Smokey Wilson and The Deans, from Standardsville, will be performing in concert.

Additionally, tickets will be available for an opportunity to win Wal-Mart gift cards for $250, $150, $100, or $50.

Thanksgiving Dinner at Salem UMC

Salem United Methodist Church is continuing its tradition of hosting Thanksgiving Dinner on the Saturday before Turkey Day. That means you'll be able to enjoy a great meal on Saturday, November 19.

Dinner starts at 6 p.m. However, beginning at 5 p.m., the church will have a Bazaar featuring Christmas decorations and gifts for your family and friends.

The dinner menu includes country ham, turnkey with dressing and gravy, green beans, candied sweet potatoes, cranberry congealed salad, assorted pies, homemade rolls, and coffee and tea.

A free will offering will be gratefully accepted for the meal. Proceeds will be used to help with the church's cleaning expenses.

Salem United Methodist Church is located on Route 632, Ca Ira Road.

Thanksgiving Service at Mourners Valley

Mourners Valley Baptist Church is hosting a Thanksgiving Service, Thanksgiving through Thanks-Living, on Saturday, November 19, at 11 a.m.

The Reverend Dr. Archie German, pastor of Union Branch Baptist Church in Amelia, will be the guest preacher; and, The Divine Voices of Cumberland will be the guest choir.

Dinner will be served after the service. Everyone is invited.

Mourners Valley Baptist Church is located on Route 20 at 5341 South Constitution Route.

Centenary UMC Hosts Brunswick Stew

Nothing says fall like a steaming bowl of Brunswick stew. And, the folks at Centenary United Methodist Church are willing to prepare that stew for you.

On Saturday, November 19, the church is hosting a benefit Brunswick Stew with proceeds going toward community outreach for the holidays.

Stew will be ready at 12 noon and for a donation of $6, you'll get a quart of some great tasting stew. And, you'll be helping to brighten the holidays for others.

So, be sure to head out to Centenary UMC on Saturday, November 19, for a quart or two of delicious stew. The church is located on Route 20 at 12247 S Constitution Route.

Chestnut Grove Baptist Church

Pastor Brad Childres and the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church family invite you to join with them for a special evening of Thanksgiving on Saturday, November 19, beginning at 6 p.m.

The evening begins with a covered dish meal. After the meal, the Arrington Sisters, from Appomattox, will perform in concert. A love offering will be accepted.

Chestnut Grove Baptist Church is located on Chestnut Grove Road, Route 612, just off Route 636, Francisco Road.

CVCS Offers Thanksgiving Meals

Central Virginia Christian School will be providing “take-out” Thanksgiving meals for those who are homebound or in need throughout the community.

The boxed dinners may be picked up at CVCS from 5 to 7 p.m., on Wednesday, November 23, at the school, which is located off Route 15 in the Buckingham County Industrial Park.

On Saturday, November 19, from 1 to 4 p.m., The Spa in Dillwyn is hosting its Christmas Open House. Local artist Nan Pennington Holt will be on hand with copies of Hero Finds His Path, a children's picture book authored by Susan Amundson and illustrated by Nan. Two local artisans, Jennifer Spears and Leah Olivier will also be on hand with their handcrafted jewelry.

Cornhole Set for Christmas?

If you are looking for a great Christmas gift for aspiring cornhole players or cornhole masters, the carpentry department at the Buckingham Career and Technical Education Center is making some of the best cornhole boards in these parts and beyond.

The cornhole bags are made by students in the CTE family and consumer sciences department. They will monogram the bags with BCHS or personalize them to your specifications at an additional cost.

The sets are really well made and proceeds are recycled back into the CTE programs and co-curricular activities. For more information, call the Buckingham CTE Center at 969-6180; or stop by during regular school hours.

AVFD Auction

Those Arvonia Volunteer Firefighters are readying for their annual Christmas Auction, scheduled for Friday, December 2, at 7 p.m. Their main task at this point is collecting donations of new and used items in good condition.

“We are going to have lots of new items but it always makes for a better sale to have the one-of-a-kind used items, too,” shared a AVFD spokesperson.

You may drop-off donated items at the storage building next to the main truck building. Or, contact any AVFD member to arrange for pick-up; or, call Steve at (434)581-3002.

International Mission Study

The International Mission Study for the James River Baptist Association will be held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church on Sunday, November 27, at 3 p.m.

This year's theme is Treasures of God's Heart featuring the multicultural city of London. Some foods from London will be available.

Additionally, Malcolm Warfield will share pictures from his mission trip to Africa.

“Come and learn about God's work in our world,” invited a spokesperson.

Mt. Zion Baptist Church is located on Route 610 at 6277 Cartersville Road in New Canton.

BCYL Basketball Signups

Registration for Buckingham County Youth League Boys and Girls Basketball will be held on Sunday, November 20, at Buckingham County Middle School from 2 to 4 p.m.
