Editor, The Herald:

On June 17 the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary held an auction and spaghetti dinner to raise money for the fire department. The majority of the items sold at auction were donated by former Cumberland resident Mary Laird after she downsized from her home into an apartment. The auction and dinner were a huge success and raised over $1,900 for the fire department.

The auxiliary would like to thank the Cumberland community for its wonderful support; Mrs. Laird and her family for their generous donation of furniture, tools and household goods; Cooper and Kathy Madsen for their donation of plants from their greenhouse; auctioneer Cabell Metts and his family for donating their time and auctioneering expertise to our cause; the Fellowship Committee at Farmville Presbyterian Church for their donation of food for our dinner; and Payne Memorial Methodist Church for donating the use of their facilities.

Our auxiliary holds a number of fundraisers throughout the year. Due to the support of our community we have been able to donate $18,500 to the fire department since 2008. This money is used by the fire department to purchase equipment and supplies that the county is not able to fund. We are truly fortunate to live in a community that so generously supports its volunteers! Our next fundraiser will be a BBQ chicken sale which is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 3 at the firehouse. We look forward to another great turnout!
